Our Advocate in heaven

1 John 2:1-2

“1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.”

I imagine, as if standing in the heavenly court, before our righteous Judge, God the Father.

As the Judge enters the courtroom, my heart starts to pound. His glory fills the room. His holiness is too much to bear. I feel wholly unworthy to be in His glorious presence.

I glance up at my Advocate. He is completely calm - He radiates peace and love. He is Faithful and True. I don’t deserve Him.

My Advocate stands up to answer the charges: “She is completely guilty, Your Honour. In fact, she has even done worse than what she is accused of. She now makes full and complete confession before You.”

I bow my head, tears rolling down my face. Their greatness is too much to bear.

I am guilty… I admit my guilt… I see my punishment.

Guilty

The gavel pounds, its sound cutting through me like a blade. The Judge’s voice follows: “What should her sentence be?”

My Advocate answers, “Her sentence shall be death; she deserves the full wrath of this righteous court.”

All along, Satan, the accuser, is having great fun at all this - watching, waiting.

But then, my Advocate asks to approach the bench.

As He draws close to the Judge, He simply says, “Father, this one belongs to Me. I paid her price. I took the wrath and punishment from this court that she deserves.”

The gavel sounds again, and the Judge cries out, “Guilty as charged! Penalty satisfied!”

My accuser starts going crazy. “Aren’t you even going to put her on probation?”

“No!” the Judge declares. “The penalty has been completely paid by My Son. There is nothing to put her on probation for.”

Then the Judge turns to our Advocate and says, “Son, You said this one belongs to You. I release her into Your care.”

Case closed!
